Reading the meter at checkout: can that be better?

Reading works well with one property and a handful of trusted guests, but it takes time, goes wrong if a reading is not noted and sometimes leads to discussion afterwards. An alternative is for guests to buy electricity in advance at a price you set: they see their consumption live and can adjust, you no longer need to calculate anything. With multiple properties or changing guests via a platform, this often outweighs the effort of setting it up; with one property and known guests, reading continues to work well.
