Can I set the electricity rate for my guests myself, or do I need help with that?

You set the rate per kWh yourself in the app; everything to do with the meter cabinet and wiring is handled by the electrician. This article shows exactly where that boundary lies.

Yes, the rate your guests pay per kWh (kilowatt-hour, the unit in which electricity consumption is measured — one kilowatt-hour is roughly what a hair dryer uses if you run it for an hour) you set yourself, via an app on your phone. No electrician needed for that. What does always have to be done by an electrician is the physical connection of the module in the meter cabinet: that step affects the wiring and safety of your home, and that boundary does not shift.

The shortest way to remember it: anything done with a screwdriver inside the meter cabinet is for the electrician. Anything that happens after that on a screen — setting the rate, hanging the QR code, setting the price per charging point — you do yourself, usually within a few minutes.

What an electrician must do

The module that measures your guests' consumption is connected to a separate circuit in your meter cabinet (a circuit is a separate circuit with its own fuse, like the circuit that only powers the kitchen). Making that connection requires knowledge of voltage, earthing and the residual current device — the component that cuts off the power as soon as something goes wrong, for example if an appliance breaks down. A wrong connection is not a matter of trying again; that is why this always falls to a certified professional. In the knowledge base you will find per situation what an electrician checks in detail, so you know what to expect from the visit.

What you do yourself, in the app

Once the module is installed, you activate it yourself with your phone via Bluetooth — no cable, no waiting time for a second visit. After that, you set the rate per kWh in the app, optionally with a fixed start-up cost, and the system automatically generates the QR code you hang in the property. For a charging point it works the same way: each point gets its own rate and its own code, even if you only rent charging points and nothing else. On the how-it-works page you can see exactly which steps you go through yourself and which belong to the installer.

Technically, the configuration works separately from the meter module itself: the rate is in the app environment, not in the hardware, so you can adjust a price at any time without anyone needing to come round. If you change the rate, that applies to new purchases of kWh; a guest's running balance remains unchanged.

Where the boundary shifts: setting a rate versus determining a rate

The fact that you can technically enter the rate yourself says nothing about what you are allowed to pass on to a guest or tenant — these are two different questions. One is about the button in the app, the other is about the rules that apply to your type of rental and your country. These rules vary by situation and country, and Staywatt is a metering and payment system, not an energy supplier and not a lawyer. For the question of what is allowed in your case, you look at the official text or consult a lawyer or the competent supervisor. An indication of the costs of module, subscription and markup per kWh you will find on the prices page with an overview per object.

When should you still get help?

If you have doubts about the meter cabinet itself — how many circuits there are, or whether the residual current device is still sufficient for an additional module or charging point — that is always a question for the electrician, even if the rest of the process is otherwise something you can do yourself. If you only have doubts about the rate or the layout of your account, that is not a technical question but a choice you make yourself, possibly with an accountant if it involves VAT processing.
